Although we are describing linoleum floors in our section on vinyl flooring, they are quite different products. Linoleum is made from natural materials, including linseed oil and cork or wood flour. While the colour of a vinyl floor is imprinted on its design layer, the colour of a linoleum floor permeates the entire thickness of the floor. Linoleum is a significantly more durable flooring material than vinyl flooring. Linoleum was the more popular option for many decades before being overtaken in popularity by vinyl. Vinyl flooring became the more popular option because of its lower cost and its availability in a wider range of colours and designs.

Linoleum is now making a comeback in its modern form: marmoleum. Marmoleum retains the natural properties and construction of its predecessor, however it is now available in a range of designs that rivals vinyl flooring. It is still more expensive and more challenging to work with than vinyl. Marmoleum is commonly used in commercial applications where the additional costs are justified by the exceptional durability of this product.
