Eco-Friendliness of Hardwood Flooring
Locally sourced hardwood flooring products that are certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) are among the most environmentally-friendly options. This certification confirms that forests are harvested in such a way as to ensure their ongoing health and productivity.
Hardwood flooring is derived from a renewable resource and, when properly maintained, can outlast many other flooring alternatives. Hardwood floors can also be refinished for new life after decades of wear. Technological advancements have reduced the toxicity of the
various flooring finishes, as well as improving their performance. Furthermore, since wood is widely recognized as a carbon neutral material, hardwood flooring is the primary choice as a floor covering for many LEED certified projects.
Bamboo and cork flooring also represent eco-friendly options in that they are in abundant supply and stocks are relatively quickly replenished. Cork, which is harvested as the bark of the cork tree, can be harvested every eight or nine years. Bamboo can grow at a rate of well over one foot per day.
